Baby Bushwick Beanie

My fabulous sister in law Heather asked me the other day if I thought it would be easy to modify my Bushwick Beanie pattern into a baby/toddler sized hat. Heather is a fly-by-her-needles sort of knitter and has no qualms with ripping back if something comes out all wrong, so I figured she wouldn’t hate me too much if I led her completely astray. I suggested that she might try using a worsted weight and smaller needles instead of taking the time to refigure the numbers and the cable pattern.

Two days later I received these heart stoppingly cute pictures of my lil nephew Healy, modeling a baby Bushwick Beanie. I think the sizing she obtained is pretty much right on. Healy is not quite 3 months yet, and there’s plenty of slouch for now (so it’s Brooklyn style), and it leaves him plenty of room to grow into it for some time to come.

Heather used I love Cotton yarn and US 7/4.5mm needles to make her baby beanie.

Insta August

August brought me a little bit of downtime to finish up a design that I’m very pleased with and time to start plotting my next few designs.  I’ve been looking at lots of yarns online and trying to keep myself from always picking heather greys, though they are my favorites.  Joey had a two week trip to Europe with the band and I got to watch one of his shows that was live streaming online.  I watched it with another of the band wives and we clapped and cheered and even snapped a few pics of our husbands onscreen looking like badasses and it was almost like we were there.   I even snagged one of Joey’s instagrams to share here—just look at that crowd!   Once he was back home we had a couple of lazy days together, strolling around town after a nice brunch and later him puttering around in the studio while I sat within earshot knitting.  I’m hoping for a similar couple of days this weekend!

July brought the birth of our nephew Healy, who was promptly snuggled in a handknit wool blankie and has been bringing us all love and happiness nonstop ever since. I’ve also been spending lots of time with Joey as he gets ready to start touring with Midlake again soon. There have been lots of stolen moments between his rehearsals and my work schedule to get in as much time together as we can before he leaves. I was able to catch one of their production rehearsals the other day and I was blown away… I welled up with emotion and pride at how beautiful everything sounds and how hard these guys have been working to get this album to fruition, and its almost time! There’s even been a little bit of knitting and crafting in the wee hours before I go to sleep. I have some secret knitty-type things I’m planning that I’m super excited about but I just need to find a little more time to get them going. And of course I can always count on Henry’s silly antics. He’s such a ridiculously sweet and goofy dog and he just makes us laugh and smile every single day.

And just like that, June has come to a close. Any spare moment I had these past few weeks was spent seeking sun and fun or a bit of relaxation and conversation with good friends. I was inspired by a message to ‘walk in beauty,’ and so I took the time to savor the sounds of beautiful music made by people I love and adore, the splendor of heart stopping sunrises, the wonderful feel of squishy soft American-made wool in my hands and on my knitting needles, and the unexpected delight from discovering a tiny little cactus blossom sprouting from a cutting I planted at the end of last summer.

Walk in beauty, indeed.

I can’t believe that May is over and its almost officially summer. That whole ‘time flies’ quote rings true once again. Looking over these Instagrams, it’s pretty clear that May was chock full of my most favorite things- knitting, music, cocktails, doggie snuggles, a little bit of nature, time with great friends and time with my wonderful, wonderful Joey. I’m looking forward to June, to the relaxed pace that ensues as the days start to sizzle and we are reminded that it’s okay to stop working so hard and just go have some fun- cause its SUMMERTIME!

Baby’s Primary Blankie

My sister in law Heather is expecting, and I’ve been working behind the scenes on something for my new little nephew to snuggle in when he arrives:

Insta April

Insta april

This April, Joey and I were up to our usual escapades and getting out to enjoy the pretty spring weather a little more. I bought some pretty yarn for a new knitting project, enjoyed some wine on a Friday afternoon at work, and spent some good times with good friends at our favorite bar. We spent a weekend at the Ranch and met my parents’ sweet new cow dog, Camo, and had a fabulously fun time at a Louisiana-style crawfish boil with the band. My friend Felicia and I did a woodsy photoshoot for my new knitting pattern and we came across a snake while trying to get a good shot. I started up my new knitting project while sitting at Redwood Studios and listening to some really great violin being recorded for one of Joey’s new projects. We have had plenty of new bunny sightings in our back yard and one time Henry even sat next to me, the two of us spying on them together. Joey invented a delicious new apple flavored New York Whiskey cocktail for the bar that I named The Big Apple Sour, and I got to listen to a sneak preview of the new Midlake album that is coming out later this year. I marveled at the prettiness of brown speckled eggs in my new egg tray, and had an epic fail when I attempted to bake my own pizza dough. Joey bought me a pretty gardenia plant to cheer me up after the pizza incident, and we spent many an afternoon on the tennis courts having a blast and enjoying each other’s company. And as always, love was all around us.

Whiskey and Wool

I am working on a sort-of secret knitting project right now; a gift for someone I love.   I realized yesterday that my deadline for finishing this gift is closer than I thought, so I’ve taken to working on it anywhere and everywhere.  Last night I even worked on it at the bar during happy hour.   A classic cocktail in one hand and my knitting in the other- it wasn’t a bad way to spend the evening!

Insta-March

Insta march

March was a busy and music-filled month.  We kicked things off with the 35 Denton music festival, where Redwood Studios played host to tons of bands over the course of three days, and the next weekend we went to the SXSW music festival in Austin, where Joey played a showcase with Israel Nash. We were introduced to Laura and Israel’s brand new baby and spent a couple of great nights around a giant fire pit while the guys made some great new music.  I went to a fabulous ladies’ champagne and tea party, and knitted a new wooly hat while I was sick in bed with bronchitis for a couple of days.  We also saw the first signs of spring with budding trees, blue skies and an Easter celebration, where I tested out my crafty cooking skills by dyeing Easter eggs and baking bread.  Next up: I’m looking forward to April’s nice weather, Joey’s birthday and getting back into some knitting!

Love and Coffee Mugs

Joey and I have amassed a collection of coffee mugs that tell a little story of our lives.  It wasn’t an intentional collection, but every time he leaves for a tour he comes back with a little something from whatever fabulous country or city he has visited, and the souvenirs that see the most use are always the mugs.  I have a few special ones in the collection too and I was noticing the other day how we tend to pick out certain mugs for each other, and that there may be little unspoken messages behind our selections.

When I’m pouring the coffee I always think something along the lines of “oh he gets the Union Jack cause he’s going to London soon and I’ll take the knitting one because I plan to do tons of knitting today” or “I feel like tea and I’m going to drink it out of my London tea cup and since that one is little, Joey gets the little one from Sweden. He loves Sweden.”

When he pours the coffee, he tends to make mine in the Love Is All You Knit mug and his in either the Amsterdam mug or maybe the Don’t Mess With Texas.  Sometimes he’ll bring me coffee in the little mug from Holland with the Dutch girl and boy leaning in for a kiss.  And when he is on tour, I tend to drink from a mug that is geographically close to wherever he is traveling.  Yes, there has been an “oh he’s in Spain, so I’m drinking from Barcelona today,” and I’ve even drank from his J- initial cup to feel extra close while he was away.

Our subconscious mug-selection habits may be a little silly, but one thing is for sure: our cups are always filled with love.
