Whiskey and Wool

I am working on a sort-of secret knitting project right now; a gift for someone I love.   I realized yesterday that my deadline for finishing this gift is closer than I thought, so I’ve taken to working on it anywhere and everywhere.  Last night I even worked on it at the bar during happy hour.   A classic cocktail in one hand and my knitting in the other- it wasn’t a bad way to spend the evening!

Baby Knits

A little over a year ago on the eve of 2012, Joey and I were sitting around a fire with some of our closest friends and discussing the dawning of a new year. One by one we went around the circle, each of us sharing in turn some of our most closely held ambitions. One of my goals was to design and publish a knitting pattern (which I did here and here). One of Joey’s goals was to build and open a recording studio (which he did here). When it came to our friend Israel’s turn, he looked at his wife Laura and shared that they really wanted to become parents in the coming year. I’m excited to share that he and Laura will be welcoming little Miss Willow Blanche towards the end of February!

Of course I had to pour my love and excitement for them into a couple of snuggly knits for this little one and now that they have been gifted I can share them with you.

The cardigan is the Baby Sophisticate pattern which is a really quick and adorable knit.  The hat is the Super Soft Super Simple Baby Hat by the Purl Bee and I am in love with the silly pom pom on top.  I used Berroco Vintage chunky yarn for both.

FO: Baby Hipster

When we moved to NYC two years ago, we met a lot of new people. Meeting people is always fun and exciting, but eventually you start to figure out who your real friends are; those people who are genuine, who would do anything for you cause they are really, truly, good people. Our friend Chris is one of those genuinely good-hearted friends. And when I found out he and his lovely new wife Maricar were expecting a baby boy, I knew I had to kit something for this special baby.

Pattern: Baby Sophisticate by Linden Heflin
I’m calling it the Baby Hipster, cause this baby will be growing up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Yarn: Tahki Yarns Tweedy Alpaca, 3 skeins
Needles: US 10 1/2 circs and dpns

I think it turned out really great. The pattern was straight-forward and simple and the yarn is nice and soft and tweedy!

Manly Mitts and Baby Knits

Joey’s 30th birthday was at the beginning of April and I couldn’t let the occasion pass by without knitting something especially for him.

He has been requesting fingerless gloves for quite a while now and I’ve been wanting to try Ysolda’s Garter Stitch Mitts pattern for a while…. so it was a perfect time to cast on. I started on 3/28 and finished on 4/1, knit with Louet Eastport Alpaca which is soft with a bit of a fuzzy halo. Great pattern, pretty yarn.

I’ve also cast on for another speedy project that I am quite enamored with at the moment- the Baby Sophisticate sweater.

I’m knitting this one with Tahki Tweedy Alpaca, which is soft and tweedy and nice to work with. I almost want to cast on a similar sweater with this yarn in my size! I’m so in love with it that I spilled the beans to the parents-to-be last night and showed them pictures of it in progress, and they’re totally thrilled.
